Bicycle Accident Lawyer
Did you know that the first automobile crash to ever happen in the U.S. occurred in New York City in 1896 when a motorist hit a bicyclist? Car crashes are the leading cause of death for bicyclists and it all started there. Nearly 800 bicyclists die each year as a result of car-on-bike accidents. And due to the increased popularity of bicycle riding, bike-related injuries have also increased – especially in the car-on-bike category.
In addition to injuries, many bicyclists are killed every year in car-on-bike accidents. The following statistics recorded in 2010 show what serious a problem bike-related fatalities are.
- 25% of all bicyclist fatalities occurred between the hours of 8-midnight
- 28% of all bicyclist fatalities occurred between the hours of 4-8p
- 34% of all crashes involved alcohol
- 67% of bicyclist fatalities occurred at non-intersections
- 72% of all bicyclist fatalities occurred in urban areas
- 86% of all bicyclists killed were males
While some car-on-bike collisions may result less serious injuries such as road rash, contusions and lacerations, many result in far more serious injuries including brain injuries and death. In fact, accidents involving motor vehicles are responsible for 90% of all bicycle-related deaths and 10% of all nonfatal injuries. Off-road bicyclists have a 40% lower occurrence of facial, head, and dental injuries than on-road bicyclists; this is directly related to lack of vehicular traffic and more frequent helmet use among off-road cyclists.

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationIn addition to fatalities related to auto-on-bike accidents, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates bicycle-related injuries that require emergency treatment exceed 580,000 visits every year. And that statistic is on the low end since not all bicycle-related injuries are serious enough for emergency care, and thus, are not reported.
