In November 2018, California was struck by the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history. The massive Camp Fire has claimed the lives of more than 60 people and displaced over 50,000 more. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the wildfire has ravaged nearly 10,000 homes and scorched more than 140,000 acres. In addition, over 600 California residents have been reported missing.
A new lawsuit has alleged that Pacific Gas & Electric Co. bears responsibility for the Camp Fire, claiming that the California utility failed to properly inspect and maintain its power lines. The lawsuit has brought calls from local, state, and federal officials for an investigation into PG&E’s maintenance of its infrastructure and the utility’s role in the Camp Fire.

On November 8, 2018, the Camp Fire was sparked in the town of Paradise, California. Since then, the wildfire has caused unprecedented damage in the state, as tens of thousands of people have fled their homes into shelters.
The displacement has raised serious concerns about whether California is even equipped to handle such an evacuation and whether there will be enough emergency housing available for wildfire victims. Early reports indicate that many wildfire victims may potentially be forced to relocate out of state or face homelessness.

In a recently filed lawsuit, local homeowners allege that the wildfire started as the result of a faulty high-voltage transmission line owned by PG&E, which created sparks that set off the blaze across Northern California.
In addition, dozens of insurance companies have joined together in filing suit against PG&E. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for personal injuries, property damage, and wrongful deaths that their customers have suffered.
After news broke about the impending litigation against the utility, PG&E’s stock price plunged, as investors expressed concern about whether the utility had adequate insurance coverage to compensate victims for the devastating losses they are facing, as well as punitive damages.

The California Camp Fire lawsuits are just the latest in legal woes for PG&E. In the 1990s, the utility was the target of a class-action lawsuit that resulted in a $333 million settlement, the largest award in a direct-action lawsuit in American history.
That litigation was brought because of PG&E’s role in groundwater contamination in the town of Hinkley, California, in the Mojave Desert. It was found that PG&E dumped some 370 million gallons of wastewater tainted with chromium 6, a carcinogenic heavy metal, into nearby ponds from 1952 to 1966.
A 1993 investigation led by law clerk Erin Brockovich uncovered the significant health impacts of the water contamination on local residents. That investigation was later the basis of the 2000 movie Erin Brockovich.
In the decades since that settlement, Hinkley has effectively become a ghost town as fears over water contamination have persisted.
