Some of the largest expenses that injury victims will face following a bus collision are medical expenses. Depending on the severity of the crash and the resulting injuries, injury victims can easily face thousands of dollars in initial medical expenses and can face thousands more in continuing medical expenses and therapy costs. The financial worries these expenses cause can easily be exacerbated if the injury victim is unable to work and has no other source of income. How is an injury victim supposed to pay for medical expenses following a serious bus accident?
Good News and Bad News
The good news is that a bus accident caused by the negligence of another person usually enables an injury victim to recover compensation for his or her medical expenses and ongoing treatment needs. Once the injury victim prevails in a bus accident lawsuit, the negligent party (the “defendant”) can be ordered to pay a judgment consisting of compensation for the victim’s losses, including medical expenses and costs.

Any number of factors can cause a bus accident lawsuit to drag on for months or even years. Even after a successful bus accident lawsuit, it can take time before the negligent defendant actually pays the judgment. Despite these delays in the resolution of your case, medical providers and hospitals can still demand payment from you for services rendered.
So How Does an Injury Victim Pay for His or Her Medical Care?

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationIn the time between the initial receipt of medical care and the payment of a judgment by the negligent defendant, the primary responsibility for paying the victim’s medical expenses falls on the victim (or the victim’s parents or guardian, if the victim is a minor child). There are several ways injury victims can meet this obligation:
- Paying the medical bills directly: The victim is always able to pay his or her own medical expenses as charged. Any judgment received from the negligent defendant would then go to compensating the victim for his or her actual expenses. If the victim is able to pay his or her expenses, the victim may avoid interest charges and penalties and unpleasant collection calls while the bus accident lawsuit is pending.
- Negotiating with the medical provider or hospital: Some hospitals and medical providers may be sensitive to the fact that you suffered serious injuries and are seeking compensation through a lawsuit and offer some type of payment arrangement. This would enable you to delay paying the full amount owed but would require you to pay some smaller amount toward your obligations.
- Accepting a settlement: Following a bus accident, if the defendant is clearly negligent and responsible for causing the crash and the victim’s injuries, the defendant or his or her insurer is likely to offer a settlement to the victim. Accepting the settlement is another manner by which a victim can pay off his or her medical expenses quickly. However, accepting a settlement will often preclude you from seeking additional compensation later, even if your actual losses turn out to be higher than expected. It is important to have your settlement evaluated by an experienced bus accident attorney to ensure your settlement best protects your interests.
