Every insurance provider uses measurables to determine a baseline for the value of a car accident claim. Farmers Insurance is no different. The company’s goal is to settle auto injury claims for as little money as possible.
Farmers uses a computer system known as “Colossus” to generate a claim’s value, and claims adjusters and claims representatives receive glowing praise if they meet or exceed goals defined by their computer system. Some employees have received raises because their performance in minimizing car accident claims have continued to save the company money.
While every company has the responsibility to weed out fraudulent and exaggerated claims of loss, many people suffer real injuries that deserve compensation.

To receive fair compensation for injuries you sustained in a Denver auto accident, you must convince the Farmers claims adjuster that your claim is worth more than the machine says. You cannot negotiate a settlement successfully if you are insufficiently prepared. You lose your bargaining power if you file an injury claim before it is ready.
What you need to do is gather up enough evidence to prove to the claims adjuster that you deserve a larger settlement. Furthermore, your evidence should place the blame squarely on Farmer’s customer.
Farmers will argue that you caused or contributed to the motor vehicle accident in some way and therefore your injury claim is not worth as much. The claims adjuster has to see that going to court against your case is a risky proposition because you have the evidence to convince a jury that you were not at fault and that you suffered serious injuries.
Here are some tips to put you in a strong negotiating position:
- Thoroughly document the crash, your injuries, the damage to your car, and the auto accident scene as well. Take many photographs. Having photos is the only means to preserve the crash and the aftermath. Taking a picture of your injuries will show the adjuster that you can prove you were hurt. Similarly, showing the damage to your car in photographs is more persuasive than relying upon a repair bill.
- Know the value of your injury claim before you make a demand for settlement. You must know exactly how much money you lost regarding medical bills, lost wages and economic opportunity, and the repair or replacement cost of your vehicle. You should also know the extent of your injuries and whether they are permanent and disabling.
- Do not exaggerate. Claims adjusters can tell the difference between someone who is genuinely injured and has a valid claim for pain and suffering from a person who is malingering. Making the first demand at a higher number than you are willing to settle at is a perfectly acceptable negotiating tactic as long as it is reasonable.
