Depending on your job duties, work environment, and occupation, you may be more likely to suffer from a workplace injury. In the U.S., a worker is injured on the job every seven seconds.
Construction workers, manufacturers, truck drivers, and natural resource extractors are among the most dangerous jobs for Texans. The most common injuries include:

Despite what your boss might think, it’s possible to work too hard. If you lift or lower heavy equipment, or use a repetitive motion over and over, you’re more likely to overexert and injure yourself.

Serious workplace injuries can occur if you are struck by an object or get trapped between pieces of equipment. Personal protective equipment and proper safety measures may reduce the incidence of these events, but you can still be seriously injured even with safety measures in place.

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationSlips, Trips, and Falls
No matter where you work, a slip and fall can result in a minor bump or a severe injury. Any time ladders, scaffolding, or other platforms that elevate you off the ground are involved, the chance of a workplace accident increases.
Sprains, Strains, or Muscle Tears
You may suffer from one of these injuries due to overexertion or from a fall. While these injuries may not be life-threatening, they may still keep you off your feet or prevent you from doing your job.
Soreness or Pain
You don’t need to be lifting heavy machinery all day to feel sore. Sitting at a desk can cause extreme back pain that makes it impossible to focus on doing your job.
Cuts and Lacerations
Cuts and lacerations happen in a split second. They may require stitches, bandages, and time off from your job while you heal.

What to Do After a Workplace Injury
The actions you take after a workplace accident are important for your health and safety. It is important in any accident to remain as calm as possible, as well as to observe the following steps.
Seek Medical Attention
If the accident is serious, call 9-1-1 right away to ensure that you receive immediate help. Visit your doctor as soon as possible to determine if you need further medical treatment for workplace injuries.
Report the Accident
Inform your supervisor within 30 days of the date you were injured or first knew your injury or illness might be work-related.
File a Workers’ Compensation Claim
You must file a workers’ compensation claim within one year of the injury. If it is not immediately clear that your injury is work-related, your time to file a claim will extend to when you should have known the problem was work-related. Usually, filing a workers’ compensation claim bars you from filing a lawsuit against your employer. An experienced Austin workplace accident attorney may help guide you toward the best path for seeking compensation.
Document the Accident
Whether your work location changes every day or you routinely go to the same place, it is important to gather as much information as possible after the accident. When possible, try to collect:
- Names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the accident
- Pictures of the location of the accident
- Pictures of equipment, tools, or other objects that contributed to your injury
- Injuries you sustained
Monitor Your Health
- After you leave the hospital or doctor’s office, be sure to watch for any additional signs or symptoms that occur in the days following the accident
- Don’t ignore any signs or symptoms because you can experience the effects of an accident several days after it happens
Document Your Expenses
A workplace injury can be expensive. Hospital costs and missed work can quickly add up. You shouldn’t have to pay if you were injured at your job. It’s important that you keep track of all receipts and paperwork related to your accident. This could include:
- Hospital and doctor bills
- Insurance coverage and payments
- Physical therapy
- Chiropractor bills
- Documented time taken off from work

FAQs
What Are My Safety Rights As a Worker?
Most of the time, workplace injuries are accidents. However, employees are sometimes placed in uncomfortable and dangerous situations when safety measures and laws are ignored. As an employee, you have a right to a safe work environment. OSHA explains that employees have a right to:
- Receive workplace safety and health training in a language you understand
- Work on safe machines
- Receive required safety equipment, such as gloves or a harness and lifeline for falls
- Be protected from toxic chemicals
- Request an OSHA inspection and speak to the inspector
- Report an injury or illness, and get copies of your medical records
- Review records of work-related injuries and illnesses
- See the results of tests taken to find workplace hazards
If you feel unsafe at your workplace or believe your employer has violated any safety requirements, you can report these violations to the Safety Violations Hotline at 1-800-452-9595. These reports can be done anonymously in both English and Spanish.
What Is Workers’ Compensation?
Workers’ compensation provides workers with medical and income benefits after a work-related injury or illness. The injury must have occurred while working and cannot be the result of an employee’s horseplay, purposeful self-injury, worker intoxication from drugs or alcohol, or voluntarily participating in an off-duty recreational activity.
How Do I Know If My Employer Has Workers’ Compensation?
In Texas, employers are not required to have workers’ compensation coverage. When you are hired, a Texas company is required to let you know whether they have workers’ compensation coverage and that you have a right to reject this coverage. Your employer must also post a notice of coverage at your workplace and let you know when any changes are made to its workers’ compensation policy.
Will I Be Paid While I Am Unable to Work?
If your work injury prevents you from working for more than seven days, you may be able to get temporary income benefits (TIBs). However, if you are able to return in seven days or less, your employer will not need to pay you for the wages you lost while you were injured. For serious work injuries that require weeks, months, or even years to heal from, you may be able eligible for more financial support. Contact an experienced work injury attorney to find out more.
When Do I Need to Return to Work?
After your injury, a doctor will provide you and your employer with a notice about your ability to work while you are healing. This might include how much you can safely lift, how long you can sit or stand, or your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. In some cases, you may be able to return to work immediately, but with a modification and limitation on the scope of your job duties. It is important to communicate with your doctor to determine when it is safe for you to resume work.
Once you are cleared to return to work, it is important that you return immediately. If you delay your return to work after a doctor has deemed you fit to work, you may lose your temporary income benefits.
Will I Still Have a Job to Return to After My Injury?
In Texas, employees are at-will and can be fired at any time for any reason. However, there are limitations to this law. Employees may not be fired in retaliation for filing a workers’ compensation claim. The loss of employment and an injury can be difficult to navigate on your own. Call an experienced injury lawyer to discuss your options.
